Important Achievements The Botanical Garden

»  The signing of the Marco agreement with INDE for the creation of the National Botanical Garden.

»  The acceptance by the Guatemalan vice presidency to include it in the “National” category.

»  The creation of a preliminary Development Plan providing the guidelines for the development of programs and activities of the National Botanical Garden.

»  Socioeconomic and environmental description of Finca San Luis Buena Vista in order to obtain a general view of the area, and the development of the programs based on the local resources.

»  Elaboration of existing infrastructure plans, to add the historic patrimony of the farm in the new infrastructure design.

»  Creation of a Management and Handling of Financial Resources Plan, which is the base of  future programs that will be implemented in the National Botanical Garden.

»  Description of the hydro-forest characteristics of Río Michatoya basin, to take measures to reestablish the ecological integrity in the area, and guarantee the production of electricity in the same.

Challenges of The Botanic Garden

»  That INDE gives to Fundación Defensores de la Naturaleza the assets and farms with the corresponding legal support.

»  Development of the Botanical Garden zones, with specific areas:  specific list of collections, development zones with their corresponding working plans, approval of the design.

»  Planning priorities:  development of lines, programs and phases of development, environmental education, conservation and social investigation, institutional development.

»  Development priorities:  development of phase I for the year 2010, collections, priority nurseries; infrastructure:  parking lots, nurseries, collections area, visitor center, community assignment (strategy).

»  To launch a funds campaign at a national and international level.

»  The opening in 2012 of the area of most important collections in the Botanical Garden.
